SOUTH LAKES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WINS STATE COMPETITION

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sarah Quan, senior at South Lakes High School in Reston, won first place in the instrumental category of the Virginia State James A. Bland competition, and a $2500 scholarship, held at the Virginia State Lions Club Convention on May 16. She is a violinist and played Brahms Violin Concerto in D Major. The convention was held at the Sheraton Premier Hotel at 8661 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, Virginia. To reach the state finals, Miss Quan won the local competition in Reston in February and the district competition in Alexandria in April. She competed against the winners from five other state districts in Vienna to win the state competition. Two hundred and ninety talented musicians competed at the local and district levels in the instrumental category. Miss Quan plans to continue her education in music at Brigham Young University. MUSIC COMPETITION WINNERS HONORED BY RESTON LIONS

 

Winners of the James A. Bland Music Scholarship competition, co-sponsored by the Reston lions Club and the Reston Community Center and held at the community center at 2301 Coles Neck Road, on Tuesday, February 11 were as follows: vocal competition, Nicole Marie Frank, first place; Allison Gabrielle Engel, second place and Cecelia Steffen McKinley, third place. Instrument competition, Sarah Quan, first place; Abigail Martin, second place and Gabrielle Li, third place.

 

  First place winners received prizes of $100 and are eligible to compete in Virginia Lions Regional, District and State competitions for additional prizes. Second place winners received $75 prizes and third place winners received $50.

 

  Lions Steve Reber and John Gazley were co-chairs. Judges were Lydia Kriso, Gretel Von Pischke, Katie Katinas and Leslie Luxemburg.

 

  The Reston Lions Club and the Reston Community Center has co-sponsored the James A. Bland Music Scholarship competition annually since 1982. 544 talented students from the Reston and Herndon areas have participated in the competition during this period.

James A Bland Competition set for February 11th

The Reston Bland Contest will be held on Tuesday, February 11th at 7:30 pm in the Reston Community Center Theater at the Hunter Woods Shopping Center sponsored by the Reston Lions Club.  Don't let the name fool you.  This free to enter, and free to attend concert brings together some of the most talented musical Youth of all ages to compete.  Attend and see have a chance to see an example of what Lions Club does for the community.

Reston James A Bland Music Scholarship Competition concludes for another year with an amazing display of musical talent. Over a dozen local youth musicians battled it out at the 2013 Reston Bland Competition that took place on Jan 29th at 7:30pm. Winners of the Vocal Group were Alexis Michelle Gruber, first Place; William Meinert, second place and Nikole James, third place.
Winners in the instrument group were Yechan Lim, first place; Tatiana Liu, second place and Sarah Slate, third place.

Reston Lions to Direct Parking for Brewfest - Proceeds to Charity

The Lions Club will also hand out information about it's work in the community and be available to answer questions that attendees may have about the work of our wonderful organization.

White Cane Fundraiser a Success!

The Reston Lions Club completed their first White Cane fundraiser over the Aug 4th weekend at the Franklin Farms Rd Giant.  The Club with the help of 6 volunteer members was able to raise close to Four Hundred dollars for Vision research, one of the primary causes supported by Lions Club worldwide.  Congratulations and thanks for making this event such a success!

Huge Competition Seen at Local Music Contest

Heart-felt congratulations go out to Ryan Sill and Alexander Pauken for taking 1st place vocal and instrumental respectively amid stiff competition at the Local Reston "James A. Bland" Contest held on February 7th, 2012.  They will go on in the coming weeks to compete at a District level Contest for even larger awards and compete to reach the Region and State level competitions.

Local Talent Shines in Reston Bland Contest

Congratulations to Alexis Michelle Gruber(Dominion High School) and Antonia Isabella Stabile(Oakton High School) for taking 1st place vocal and instrumental respectively amid stiff competition at the Reston Bland Contest held on February 8th, 2011.  The Contest featured 14 contestants from area Elementary, Middle and High Schools.  Extraordinary performances were given by all and a heart-felt thank you goes out to all the teachers, family, judges, and contestants that participated.
