Lions to Start Collecting Box Tops and Labels for Dogwood Elementary

After the meeting on Wednesday, 3/13, we compiled a short list of simple things we can do to support Dogwood Elementary and their efforts to provide the best education possible to some of our highest-need community children.  We are going to organize the collection of Box Tops and Soup Labels as described below.  Also, below is a list of links to local grocery retailers that you should register your discount/club card to for earning points and money to support the school just by shopping where you already shop.  This should be relatively painless.  Questions, contact RestonLionsClub@gmail.com .Box Tops for Education
In addition, we are encouraging friends and family to collect Box Tops for Education (a Program run by General Mills).  Attached is a list of common products that contain Box tops, along with a link to the list of products that contain Labels for Education.  Essentially, you save the Box Top part of the packaging of an item (Cheerios Breakfast Cereal, for example).  Each Box Top is worth 10 cents when returned by the school.  Idea:  We collect the Box Tops for the school and they get money towards classroom materials etc.  It's a great program.  This won't cost anything but a few seconds before you recycle the box/Can etc.  Full Participating Product List
Labels For Education
Labels for Education is a program run by Campbell's Soup although many other products have been added that are not just Soup.  Same premise for collecting them, just a different program and products.

History and Challenges of Dogwood School Shared with Lions

Tamara Ballou, Interim Principal, and William Vardeman, Dogwood Elem. School came to the Lions Club meeting Wednesday night, 2,20 and discussed the history and challenges and accomplishments of the school where we have staged our Mulch sales for many years.  Dogwood Elementary is majority low-income, majority Hispanic and other second languages.
Among it's challenges, Dogwood also was devastated by a fire in November of 2000. (See Article in the Washington Times.)  After a struggle to rebuild the school it still faced a perilous battle to re-invent itself.  It was rated as a failing school under “no child left behind” leading to many efforts to overcome this.  They have since been able to achieve significant successes, no longer seen as failing, with small classes (12:1 student-Teacher ratio) and challenging curriculum.  The road ahead is difficult.
While decisions still need to be made, the generosity the school has shown for so many years in sharing their parking lot as a staging area for our annual Mulch Sale Fundraiser and re-arranging week-end events to be able to help us out, we will be thinking as a club about ways to support them.  As a club who prides ourselves on Service, we can put our collective heads together and see if we can provide this well-deserved community school some assistance.
