Reston Lions Club Tree Planting Project

Reston Lions Club Tree Planting Project - Photos by Don Atreides http://donatreides.com/

On Saturday, October 15th, RA environmental resource staff and volunteers worked along Lawyers Road. The project, an example of Right Plant, Right Place.

Each time Dominion Virginia Power does their required tree pruning for their routine maintenance we receive calls from the residents that live and drive down Lawyers Road. For safety reasons, the trees need to be reduced in size and the topping of the trees is pretty dramatic and unattractive. However, this is more than a beautification project, it’s a great example of appropriate tree species planted below a large utility line.

Choosing an appropriate planting based on space and use is a big factor in the overall health and environmental well-being of the plant. We planted species that are native trees and shrubs. The plants are approved by Dominion Virginia Power as they will not grow large enough to get into the power lines. Dominion Virginia Power is very supportive of this demonstration project. They worked with us to remove the large stand of Bamboo that was growing on this site. Bamboo is an aggressive plant that is on the list of Reston’s 8 banned plants.

We are grateful to have the help of the Reston Lions Club for this planting project. http://www.restonlions.org
